Surely this is one of the finest art museums in France. The time span covered across multiple galleries and floors takes us from early Greek and Roman sculptures all the way up to modern art. The collection is exquisite in both its breath and depth. I’ve included some of my favorites here. Prepare to spend a good part of the day here. The café terrace is a welcome refuge. The gift shop has some thing for everyone. I bought many postcards – – their collection is pretty great! Oh, and if the lady at the ticket counter yells at you in angry French when you don’t understand her, please don’t take it personally. She did that to me, too!

The Beau Arts Museum in Lyon impresses with its extensive collection of fine art spanning various periods and styles.
Centrally located in the town, the museum features notable pieces including works by Rubens, Rembrandt, and Poussin. Interestingly, the museum is often referred to as the "Little Louvre" due to its diverse collection. Housed in a former Benedictine convent, the setting adds to its unique charm, making it a great option for art enthusiasts.
It's a plus that admission is also included in the city day pass, and one of the compelling options in Lyon between the Museum of Confluences. If you keep strategically within a 24hour window, you can even go for both on a one day pass.

I'm giving it 4 stars even though I went on a day where it was officially closed!! I sneaked into the courtyard, and managed to see a few pieces of sculptures before being "ushered" out of the place!
Edit:
So I finally visited on my last Sunday in Lyon! And spent a solid 4 hours through a chronological display of art and cultures from the ancient to the modern! I think I might skip the Louvre after this!! Solid collection of old masters and ancient artifacts!!

A mini Louvre in my opinion. Some stunning collections that are beautifully showcased across the ages & cultures. No crowds as in Le Louvre & some absolute gems to be found in painting, glass, ceramics, ancient cultures & more recent eras such as belle epoque & art nouveau. Well worth a visit. Only downside is photography is not allowed.

I would be deeply embarrassed if I was this museum curator...
Why?
Despite having a great collection they choose, willfully, to not have any English anywhere.
Normally I would say, we are in another country, you shouldn't expect them to speak a different Language.
But in this case, it is a great shame. It is not for lack of funds or knowledge. It is an active choice.
A museum should be a place for all to learn, art and history belongs to all. Many foreigners visit this place yet have a subpar experience.
I have traveled many 3rd world countries and they all make sure their museums offer descriptions in English.
In Paris they do as well. Is Lyon second rate to Paris in this regard?
Are we really to believe you can't put up English descriptions for your permanent collection? An intern could do this with a printer in a week. Heck just use Chatgpt and it will be done in 30 seconds.
Why do you choose to disregard foreigners in this way? Do you not wish for them to learn?
